Anna and I took part in the Amazon Prime Day frenzy last week for the first time. We’ve been wanting a cordless vacuum for a while but never had the incentive to buy until now. We purchased a Dyson V8 Absolute Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner (model number 214730-01) for $364.99, normally $499. While this purchase wasn’t cheap, or a spur of the moment purchase, it has lived up to our expectations thus far.
Why the Dyson V8 Absolute?
Somewhere along the way, I’ve traded my desires for big screen tvs, loud stereo systems, and fast cars for more practical things like car seat covers, child strollers, and now, vacuums. While I watched many videos online comparing the Dyson V6, Dyson V7, Dyson V8, and Dyson V10 models, Anna and I just couldn’t pull the trigger. We have an old Kirby vacuum that was given to me by my parents when I moved out of the house. It is the same vacuum that I grew up with. The Kirby is a beast, literally, it is loud, adjustable, and does a good job cleaning.
So why did we want another vacuum? Because as much as we love the Kirby vacuum and have no complaints about its cleaning capabilities, it is VERY HEAVY. And has a cord.
Anna and I own a rental and find ourselves lugging the Kirby throughout the property. We usually vacuum hard to reach areas on the ceiling that have cobwebs and the stairs that have dust bunnies. This past year, we were trying to clean the ceilings and stairs with the Kirby in between tenants and had enough of carrying the heavy vacuum while making sure we had enough cord to clean those areas.
With these issues, we wanted something cordless, lighter, and more powerful. The Dyson V8 Absolute was the winner.
It Sucks… In a Good Way
#DadJoke. One of the main things I wanted in the new vacuum, besides being cordless, was powerful suction. The only thing that I noticed that the Dyson V8 Absolute sucked less of was money from my pocket compared to the Dyson V10 which retails for around $699.99. All puns aside, the Dyson V8 Absolute as listed on Amazon comes with:
- Combination tool for crevices and surfaces
- Crevice tool for hard to reach places
- Mini motorized tool to remove pet hair and ground-in dirt
- Soft dusting brush for gentle dusting
- HEPA filtration to capture allergens
- Soft roller cleaner head for large debris – designed for hard floors
The Dyson V8 only weighs 5.75 pounds, so we have found it much easier to clean the areas that were a struggle to clean with a corded, heavier vacuum. We can easily convert it from a cordless stick floor vacuum to a ceiling cleaner to a stair cleaner in seconds.
One of the main concerns we had in purchasing a cordless vacuum was suction power. If the vacuum couldn’t clean soiled areas like our plug-in vacuum, we were not interested in making the purchase. The Dyson V8 Absolute does a tremendous job with suction power, offering two different power levels, normal mode and max mode. On normal mode the Dyson V8 can run continuously for 40 minutes using a non-motorized attachment before needing to be recharged. On max mode the run time is around 8 minutes. While the 8 minute run time is low on max mode, I have noticed that the normal mode does a great job and the max mode will only be needed in short spurts for areas that are really soiled.
Once the battery is low, we charge it for 5 hours and are good to go again. One downfall to Dyson cordless vacuums is that they haven’t designed them with the ability to swap battery packs. It would be nice to have two battery packs: one you use and one that is charged and ready to take over when you drain the first battery. The 5 hour charge time is too long in my opinion, and a swappable battery pack would eliminate this problem.
The Dyson V8 comes with a wall-mount. The wall-mount allows for charging when not in use and the ability to store two attachments. It is nice to be able to hang the vacuum in an area where we can easily grab it even though the wall-mount can’t store every attachment. If you don’t want to store the vacuum on the wall, you could store it under a bed or in a closet without it taking up too much space.
Worth the Penny Pinching
The Dyson V8 Absolute vacuum is a luxury item to own. While there are other vacuums that are less expensive out there, the Dyson V8 is definitely something to consider if you are in the market for a cordless vacuum.
What was your Amazon Prime Day purchase? Did you happen to purchase a Dyson V8 as well? I’d love to hear about it in the comments below.
