With summer unofficially over and preschool in session again, our family is transitioning back into our school routine. Getting everyone to bed at a decent time and up and out the door in the morning is sometimes a magical feat. Some days we win the battle, and some days we lose.
Here’s how we transitioned from summer to school mode this year.
Summer Bucket List
Last May, Anna and Jude made a summer bucket list. The bucket list consisted of items that Jude wanted to accomplished while home with Anna this past summer. We wanted Jude to have things to look forward to and also feel a sense of accomplishment after meeting his goals.
While we never made it to Asia or visited Santa this summer (apparently Santa is only available between Thanksgiving and Christmas), Jude was able to do a lot and had a fun summer.
School Supplies
Shopping for school supplies is never fun. In the past, we left this task to the last minute and created more stress on ourselves.
One game changer this year relieved all this stress – ONLINE GROCERY SHOPPING.
We picked the school supplies out online, along with other grocery items, and picked them up at the store. Done and done. If you have never tried online shopping for supplies, let alone groceries, I would totally suggest giving it a try. Anna and I regret not trying earlier, especially with little kids.
Preparing for the First Day
One of the biggest changes for our kids was getting them to wear socks again. All summer long our kids lived in Crocs. They have proved to be one of the best summer items for our kids. They are easy to slip on and off and are easy to clean.
We also made sure we laid the kids’ outfits out the night before. This helps cut down on the time looking for clothes in the morning and makes the morning shuffle a little easier.
First Day of Preschool Photos
Taking the perfect first day photo is getting harder each year. If you are like us, you line the kids up, have one parent clap their hands and make funny faces as the other parent keeps taking rapid fire photos hoping that one will turn out. Normally, the kids love getting their pictures taken, but when we are under a time crunch and want a specific photo, they make us work for it.
On our way to Preschool . . . Almost
We had our bags in the car, our photos taken, and I was backing out of the driveway – and then I looked at myself in the rearview mirror. I had forgotten to comb my own hair. #DadFail. Luckily, Anna was still in the driveway and was able to stay with the kids in the car while I ran into the house to comb my hair.
In His Own Words
Anna and I chatted with Jude while dinner was cooking, and here’s what he had to say about the first day.
What did you do at school today?
I will tell you tomorrow.
What did you have for lunch?
