With summer approaching and Memorial Day behind us, I wanted to share my 5 must-have summer items for kids. Anna and I have found the following items invaluable during the summer months because they make our summer a little easier.
Staying hydrated is important during the summer months, so Anna and I always have water bottles for the kids when we are home and on-the-go.
Toddler Sippy Cup
Transitioning Adelaide from bottles to sippy cups was harder on us than it was on her. We bought three different brands of sippy cups only to have issues with the cups leaking. We would hand Adelaide a sippy cup in her car seat while driving across town only to arrive at our destination with her completely soaked because the bottle had leaked. We read a few reviews online and eventually purchased the OXO Tot Transitions Sippy Cup with removable handles. The cup is great: it does NOT leak, it is dishwasher safe, it has measurement lines on the side of the cup, and it has a built in nipple cover that is great when it is not being used.
Young kid water bottle
Jude uses a CamelBak Eddy Kids 12oz water bottle. Before purchasing this water bottle for him, he used cups but didn’t have a portable bottle. He wanted a portable bottle of his own after seeing Adelaide with her sippy cup, and the Camelbak was the perfect purchase for him because it makes him feel special. Also, he needs to press on the nipple to start sucking the water, which helps prevent spills.
Our kids spend a lot of time outside. Whether it is at home or daycare, it is hard to prevent them from getting too much sun. While we do put sunscreen on them before they play outside, we wanted another layer of protection to help them beat the heat.
We purchased a sun hat for Adelaide that not only covers her head, face, and neck, but she looks cute in it, too. The hat also has a chin strap that helps keep the hat on her head and the sun out of her eyes.
Young Kid Hat
Our son would live outside year round if he could, and he has light skin and hair, which makes him very susceptible to sunburns. This year, we purchased a New Era MLB Chicago Cubs blue bucket hat. Actually, we purchased two bucket hats. The first hat was okay, but we noticed that the brim was shorter than we liked, and it didn’t seem to cover his face and neck too well. His current hat has a longer brim that covers his face and neck and gives us a little more assurance while he plays outside.
There is nothing better than sitting outside and enjoying a popsicle on a hot summer day. One thing we have done over the last two years is make our own popsicles from time to time. We purchased an Ozera Reusable Popsicle Molds Maker that makes it really easy to make your own. While there are many recipes to make different flavors, we have simplified the process by purchasing orange juice and freezing it into the mold. Jude loves it and requests popsicles almost daily. This mold set is dishwasher safe and allows us to grab one popsicle at a time without defrosting all six at once.
Baby carrier sun and bug cover
When our kids were babies, we used a Britax B-Covered All-Weather Car Seat Cover to protect them from the sun, rain, wind, bugs, and unwanted strangers feeling the need to touch them. It was a great way to keep them protected from the outdoor elements and general public.
To be honest, I was never a big fan of Crocs before I had kids. I didn’t see the need for them until we got a pair for Jude two summers ago. Now, if he is wearing footwear in the summer, you can rest assured that he is wearing Crocs. However, if he is “mowing,” then he is wearing cowboy boots. Crocs are like sandals except they offer protection for your toes. They are easy for Jude to put on and take off, they don’t require socks, and they keep his feet safe.
While this one is more for the parents than it is for the kids, I thought I would add it in. After a long day of playing outside and getting dirty, our kids are desperately in need of a bath. When cleaning their hair, it seems like we could use a few more hands to get the shampoo and scrub their hair. We recently purchased Suave Professionals Shampoo and Conditioner with a pump which has made bathtime with the kids so much easier. I think we will be switching over to a pump style body wash to help streamline the entire process.
I hope you have enjoyed my 5 must have items for summer. Hopefully you found at least one idea that you would like to try this summer. What items make summer living easier at your house?
